The Latin phrase, Carpe Diem, means to seize the day and I love how many ways people could interpret this. I also found that this phrase is linked to the phrase , Memento Mori, Which means to remember that you will die. I’m not saying this to seem cynical, but you can take this as how death is inevitable and so we should cherish the life we have, just as Carpe Diem means. I seize the day by not conforming to the latest fads and speaking my mind. Everyone these days are wearing American Eagle and Hollister but i choose to dress my own way, and sometimes I’m criticized for it but it doesn’t matter to me because I have my own thoughts and opinions on what style is.
In the movie, The Dead Poets Society, the students choose to seize the day by living how they wish, especially Neil Perry, who wants to become and actor and goes through with being the lead in the school play, even though it is against his father’s wishes. Neil, though, could not seize the day anymore when he chose to commit suicide.
I don’t know how else I will seize the day, but this movie has changed the way I look at life. I hope that I will continue seizing the day.
I like the connection you made between the two phrases “carpe diem” and “momento mori”. That was pretty cool. You need to carpe diem because memento mori. I don’t really know if that makes any sence at all, but what I’m trying to get at it you need you seize the day because someday you will have no days left to live. That’s a good blog Micky 🙂
I find the connection with Carpe Diem and remembering that you will die fascinating. Especially in the case of Neil Perry who did die. He was seizing the day, but unfortunately only seized the moment. When we think of momento mori it really relates to Neil’s case. Unfortunately, Neil must have taken the death part of this more seriously then seizing the day. Life is full of surprises and it’s really great that you can take your own style and live the way you like. YOU DO SIEZE THE DAY! Everyday you walk this earth.
I love the link between the two phrases.
I think your completly right, no matter how hard me try, we are going to die eventually so why not make the best of it?
We aren’t vampires (although I think for “Edward Cullen’s sake you may want to be Micayla) so we don’t exactly have immortality.
I really like how you put the whole vampire’s deal in there. And yes for Edward, I would want to be. Haha
